The short version

This site covers three peptides connected by one signaling system: the melanocortin receptors, which sit in the brain and touch skin pigment, appetite, and sexual desire all at once. PT-141 (bremelanotide) is the anchor. It is FDA-approved for hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women — a distress-causing, persistent loss of sexual desire not explained by another condition. Kisspeptin works one level upstream: it is the signal that starts the entire reproductive hormone cascade in the brain, studied for fertility and, more recently, for its own effect on desire. Melanotan II is a non-selective relative of PT-141, marketed as a tanning research chemical, that carries the most serious documented safety record of the three.

Why these three sit together

The organizing thread is the melanocortin and kisspeptin literature on female sexual-health research — mechanism first, marketing never. PT-141 is a synthetic analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) that activates MC4R and MC3R in the hypothalamus, engaging the neural circuitry of desire directly rather than acting on blood flow the way older approaches do [3]. Its 2019 FDA approval for HSDD is the regulatory landmark that gives this whole category a real clinical anchor [5].

Melanotan II shares the same lactam-bridged alpha-MSH backbone as PT-141 but binds every melanocortin receptor rather than one, which is why it also darkens skin — and why its side-effect profile is broader and, in case reports, more serious [16]. Kisspeptin sits outside the melanocortin family entirely; it acts on KISS1R on the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons that sit above the whole cascade, making it the compound this site treats as upstream context rather than a direct desire agonist [12]. Reading all three together — one approved, one investigational, one unapproved and higher-risk — is a way to see how differently "acts on the sexual-desire pathway" can play out depending on receptor selectivity and regulatory status.

What are research peptides

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids — smaller than a full protein, built from the same twenty-odd building blocks. The compounds discussed here are synthetic analogues of naturally occurring signaling peptides: alpha-MSH for PT-141 and Melanotan II, and the KISS1 gene product for kisspeptin. "Research chemical" is the label used for peptide material sold for laboratory research use only, outside the pharmaceutical approval and quality-control system that governs an actual prescription drug.

That distinction matters for the three compounds on this site in three different ways. Bremelanotide is an FDA-approved prescription drug for one specific indication, made and dispensed under pharmaceutical manufacturing controls [5]. Kisspeptin has never been approved for any use; the human data that exist come from small, supervised research studies run at academic centers, not from a commercial product [9]. Melanotan II has never been approved either, and unlike kisspeptin it is widely sold online as an unregulated tanning compound — testing of seized and online material has repeatedly found mislabeling and inconsistent content [16].
